CF and Third Presbyterian Church are
again teaming up for the annual “Lessons and Carols” Christmas service, to be
held in the Sanctuary of Third Presbyterian Church on Sunday December 9th at
7:00 p.m. (600 Forest Avenue in Richmond’s west end, just several blocks north
of River Road and North Ridge Road, and south of the intersection of Forest
Avenue and Patterson Avenue).
Lessons and Carols is traditionally a Christmas Eve service, done
by candlelight. Our service will be held on the third Sunday before
Christmas, and we’ll be singing the closing hymns by real candlelight. The
service will consist of nine lessons from Scripture read aloud, and between each
lesson there are one or two appropriate Christmas carols/hymns sung by the
congregation and/or choir. We will sing familiar carols and most of them
in their entirety. The first lesson is from Genesis, and the rest go
through the prophecies foretelling Christ’s coming and conclude with his
birth. The service will be led by members of CF and Third Pres with a
praise band, choir, and scripture readers. Afterwards, we’ll be having a fellowship/munchie time in the Conference Room (Room 100, next to the Sanctuary) until about 9:00 p.m.
This is a wonderful spiritual event for singles and
families. We hope you can join us in song and fellowship as we celebrate
the birth of our King!
A Special
Note
We are looking for CF folks who
would be interested in participating as part of the choir for this event.
If you have a talent to sing, we would like to encourage you to join in and
share your musical gift with us. If you can join us, please email Kim Taulbee as soon
as possible at KimT@thirdpres.org . A rehearsal will be held on Tuesday December 4, 7:30
- 9 p.m.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

| We would like to invite you to come out and join us to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation at Lewis Ginter. We’ll meet at 7:30pm in the lobby and tour the gardens together. Afterwards we will go to Panera Bread at Willow Lawn for coffee and dessert. |
| Located in historic Richmond, Va., Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden offers year-round beauty with more than 40 acres of spectacular gardens and the mid-Atlantic's only classically styled Conservatory open to the public. |
| Using
more than half a million lights, GardenFest is a fantasyland
complete with the forms of flowers, birds and butterflies. From a
grand peacock preening in the Sunken Garden to
a red and white peppermint forest, the lights
offer surprises at every turn. In the domed Conservatory, the
Central Palm Court
will house a sparkling winter wonderland with "ice-covered"
branches and white poinsettias, paperwhite narcissus and lacey white
"snowflake" chrysanthemums. The West
Wing will feature a charming woodland setting of
flora and fauna with natural materials such as reeds and lichens.
The North Wing
will include a grand holiday tree trimmed in colors of coral,
bronze and gold including ornaments of birds and butterflies. A model
train completes the scene with a snow-covered landscape dotted with
hobbit-like dwellings. (Special thanks to the Virginia Train Collectors.)
GardenFest of Lights is different every year with surprises around every
corner!

Who: for seekers and new Christians
Why: to introduce others to the faith
How: with good food & fellowship, interesting (& humorous) video lessons, and small group discussion time
Cost: The Alpha course is free; guests may voluntarily contribute $5 towards the exquisite meals
To Register: contact Lex Strickland at lexstrickland@gmail.com.
Common faith questions:
1. Where do I come from?
2. Why am I here?
3. Where am I going when I die?
4. What does Christianity have to say about these issues?
If you or any of your friends have questions similar to these - then please consider the ALPHA Course.
Alpha stands for:
Anyone interested in finding out more about the Christian faith. Adults of all ages are welcome.
Learning and laughter. It is possible to learn about the Christian faith and to have fun at the same time.
People meeting together. An opportunity to get to know others and to make new friends.
Helping one another. The small groups give you a chance to discuss issues raised during the talks.
Ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is seen as too simple or too hostile.
ALPHA is a 12-week course that provides a practical introduction to the Christian faith, for seekers and beginner Christians who wish to investigate the relevance of life and Christianity. This course is ideal for any person who is searching, or who has desired to share the gospel with a co-worker, friend or family member in a non-threatening, comfortable and FUN manner. The ALPHA lessons are taught by Nicky Gumbel on video and his messages are friendly, sincere, humorous (Nicky is British and he has a funny self-deprecating send of humor), thought provoding and moving. You will be anything but bored.
Please note that this course is not meant to be a Bible study or discipleship class for a knowledgeable or experienced Christian, but we do encourage those long term Christians to accompany their friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers, to make them feel more comfortable, especially during the first few weeks.
Each ALPHA evening:
(1) starts off with having dinner together,
(2) watching a 30-40 minute video message,
(3) breaking for a quick dessert, and
(4) then sharing thoughts in a group discussion.
Any and all questions about Christianity are welcome and encouraged.
You can get involved in the discussions, or if you prefer you can just listen and observe. No one will be called upon to respond to anything, it’s all strictly voluntary. Please don't be intimidated by the length of the series. If after 2 or 3 classes you find ALPHA is not for you, you can stop, no questions asked. And no one will be contacting you to ask why you stopped attending. It’s totally free and open, with no hassles.
We hope that all CF'ers will take hold of the promise of REACHING single people for Jesus Christ. Attend yourself, or invite a friend, relative, or co-worker whom you wish to share the Gospel with!
The following is the 12-week schedule:
week 1 - "Christianity: Boring, Untrue, and Irrelevant?"
week 2 - "Who is Jesus?"
week 3 - "Why Did Jesus Die?"
week 4 - "How Can I Be Sure Of My Faith?"
week 5 - "Why and How Should I Read the Bible?"
week 6 - "Why and How Do I Pray?"
week 7 - "How Does God Guide Us?"
week 8 - Retreat Weekend
- "Who is the Holy Spirit?"
- "What Does the Holy Spirit Do?"
- "How Can I Make the Most of the Rest of my Life?"
week 9 - "How Can I Resist Evil?"
week 10 - "Why and How Should We Tell Others?"
week 11 - "Does God Heal Today?"
week 12 - "What About the Church?"
The first 3 topics serve as the building blocks for the course, and we'd like to recommend that if at all possible, you can attend the first three sessions. If you cannot attend all the lessons and you'd like to catch up, we can loan you a book (each lesson is covered in a short chapter) an audio tape, or possibly a video.
We hope you can join us for a fun and spiritual time of learning !
